Canucks Sign David Kampf to 1-Year, Low Cost Deal
The Vancouver Canucks have signed former Maple Leafs forward David Kämpf on a one-year, $1.1 million contract.
General Manager Patrik Allvin announced on Saturday that the Vancouver Canucks have agreed to terms with forward David Kämpf on a one-year, $1.1 million contract. Kampf joins the Canucks after terminating his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs and walking away from millions of dollars to sign a “show me” deal.
“David is a very reliable two-way centre who will improve our strength and depth down the middle immediately,” said GM Patrik Allvin. “He is good in the faceoff dot and is a solid penalty killer, two areas of need we currently have on our team. His hockey IQ is also a big asset and we believe he will fit in nicely with our group.”
Kampf’s camp has narrowed his options to three teams, per Darren Dreger. After mutually terminating his deal with the Maple Leafs, Kampf is an unrestricted free agent seeking a bigger role. Vancouver, Montreal, and possibly Pittsburgh are among the clubs still in the mix.

Kämpf’s $1 million–plus deal looks pricey, but it’s prorated and closer to league minimum. Vancouver desperately needed center depth after losing Filip Chytil and Teddy Blueger, and with Reichel struggling, the Canucks’ options were thin. Kämpf won’t solve everything, but he should stabilize their struggling forward group.
Kämpf, 30, has played four games with the Toronto Marlies after posting 13 points in 59 games for the Maple Leafs last season. He brings 536 NHL games of experience and extensive international play for Czechia, including multiple World Championship medals.
