Canucks Offer Injury Update on Rookie Defenseman Zeev Buium

Canucks defenseman Zeev Buium will miss time after suffering a broken bone near his cheek. He’ll be sidelined until after the Olympics.

According to a report by Iain McIntyre, later confirmed by the coach in the media scrum on Tuesday, Vancouver Canucks rookie defenseman Zeev Buium has a broken bone near his cheek after being struck by a puck on Sunday. He is expected to miss some time.

As a result of the incident, surgery has not been ruled out, but the blueliner will likely be out until after the Olympic break. “I really love his toughness,” said Foote. “The doctors don’t think it will be surgery’ but they need to rule it out first before being 100 percent.

Buium went down in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins after getting hit by a shot. The Penguins scored on the same sequence. He fortunately got up and skated off the ice under his own power but the news is not great.

The 20-year-old defenseman was a centerpiece of the package Vancouver received from Minnesota in the Quinn Hughes trade. The rookie has recorded five goals and 20 points in 51 games this season, with six of those points coming in 20 appearances since joining the Canucks.
