Canucks Make “Veterans” Available Via Trade, Several Names In Play

The Vancouver Canucks are making it known that they are willing to make trades on veteran players. Who might be available?

Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman dropped a significant bit of news on Monday night when he wrote that the Vancouver Canucks have made it known that the team is open to trading their veteran players. While some prices will be higher than others, several names are at play here, the largest of which is obviously Quinn Hughes.

Friedman reported:

“The obvious question is: Does this mean Quinn Hughes? I’m told the answer is no, at this time.” He added that a source informed him that trading him is not their priority, nor is moving on from Filip Hronek

Interestingly, the report doesn’t explicitly say they won’t move Hughes. The report noted it is not “their priority.” In other words, they are not shopping Hughes, nor would they want to have that discussion, unless a team came to them with an outstanding offer they couldn’t ignore, or Hughes himself noted that he was looking to be moved.

As for who is available, “potential UFAs and potentially a player or two with term.”

The prominent names are Evander Kane, Teddy Blueger, Kiefer Sherwood, David Kampf, Derek Forbort, and Tyler Myers. Logically, Elias Pettersson is likely also available, despite the fact he’s got several seasons remaining on his contract. If the Canucks can move off that deal and get a solid return, one would assume they would be open to shedding his $11.6 million per season contract.

Friedman also said this is not some sort of false alarm. “This action is noteworthy because of Jim Rutherford’s track record. Historically, once he decides to act, he does not wait. His resume is full of moves consummated well before the trade deadline.”

It is important to note that the players who have no-move clauses include Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, Jake DeBrusk, Filip Hronek, Marcus Pettersson, and Tyler Myers. Players with no-trade clauses include Evander Kane, Drew O’Connor, and Teddy Blueger (all partial no-trades).

The most popular name will be Sherwood. Teams will be reaching out to the Canucks almost immediately.
