Canadiens Acquire Kyrou, Binnington in Curious Multi-Player Trade Pitch
A writer pitched the Montreal Canadiens to trade for both Jordan Kyrou and Jordan Binnington, so is it plausible?
It’s well known that the Montreal Canadiens want to add a top-six forward to their group. Preferably, GM Kent Hughes is looking for a second-line center. At the same time, the team has seen some struggles in goal. Across the league, the St. Louis Blues are open for business, and several names have popped up in trade speculation. Could there be a match between the two teams?
Maybe, but a recent blockbuster trade pitch might not be something fans should get too excited about.
The Trade Pitch
Jordan Kyrou is a name that might be on the move, so it makes sense that Jesse Courville-Lynch of The Hockey Writers recently pitched a blockbuster trade that included the forward. He’s been loosely connected to the Canadiens before, so it’s fair to connect him again. Meanwhile, jumping on the idea that the Canadiens might want to address their struggles in goal, Jordan Binnington was tossed in the same trade pitch.
That’s a whopper and a bit more than the Blues undergoing an early-season scuffle. The pitch sends both Kyrou and Binnington to Montreal. The 27-year-old Kyrou is in the third season of his eight-year, $65 million extension signed with the Blues in 2022, while Binnington, 32, is in year five of the six-year, $36 million deal he signed to stay in St. Louis in 2021.
Here’s where things get intriguing and take us definitely into blockbuster territory.
He speculated that a return would resemble a package that includes Jake Evans, Sam Montembeault, Joshua Roy, and draft picks going back to St. Louis.
Jordan Binnington Doesn’t Make Sense for Montreal
While acquiring Kyrou would make a lot of sense, adding Binnington like it’s no big thing feels unnecessary, and for several reasons, not limited to the fact that Binnington is a powder keg potentially coming to a Canadiens locker room that has been said to have questions about its culture.
Could they use an upgrade over their current tandem of Montembeault and Dobes? Absolutely, but Binnington is a risk given his temperament and inconsistencies ever since winning the Stanley Cup in 2018-19.

Not to mention, they have top prospect Jacob Fowler and his star potential knocking on the door, so there’s no point in giving up more assets for a risky goaltender that will only help them win over the next year and a half.
Although it would be nice, this core they’ve built in Montreal doesn’t have to win now; they have a 10+ year window that’s just beginning to open, and their front office knows not to rush things unless the right opportunity comes along.
