Canadiens Could Peddle Another Blueliner to Add a Forward

Explore the latest Canadiens trade rumors and how they may peddle a blueliner for a forward before the trade deadline.

As per Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News, “Given the Canadiens’ recent trade history, it wouldn’t be surprising if they peddle another blueliner to add a forward.” He adds, “However, a dire dearth of available talent in the trade market suggests the March 6 trade deadline might be their best opportunity to do so.”

The Canadiens are reportedly among several teams looking to add a forward this season. However, unlike many teams, the Habs are also in a position to draw on an area of strength to fill a need.

Despite reports that some teams ar asking, the Canadiens aren’t looking to move Kaiden Guhle, who’s just starting a five-year, $5.5M deal and valued for his mobility and physical play. Marco D’Amico of RG.org reported that if they deal from their blue line for a top-six forward, candidates include Arber Xhekaj, Jayden Struble, or Adam Engstrom, with Alexandre Carrier possible once David Reinbacher arrives.

Ideally, the Canadiens would like to add a second-line center. They’ve been linked to Ryan O’Reilly, Nazem Kadri, and others from teams who are looking to become sellers. However, it has also been speculated that they are one of several teams looking at Kiefer Sherwood of the Vancouver Canucks. There isn’t anything imminent on that front, as no team has been given permission to speak directly with Sherwood.

Will the Canadiens Make a Trade Splash?

TSN’s Darren Dreger recently reported, “I keep looking at Montreal…one of those teams that most definitely is continually kicking tires…” He wondered whether there was a potential fit with the St. Louis Blues and some of their assets up front.

The Canadiens have plenty of other pieces they can dangle in a trade, including one of the deepest prospect pools in the NHL. GM Kent Hughes has $3.7 million in cap space to work with and few forwards are unaffordable if the right package and deal is there to be made.
