Bruins’ McAvoy Exits Game After High Hit from Panthers’ Vilmanis
Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was forced to leave the game against Florida following a high, elbow-first hit.
In a tense matchup between the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was forced to leave the game early following a high, elbow-first hit from Florida forward Sandis Vilmanis. Chris Johnston of TSN writes, “Tough to see this anytime, but especially right before Charlie McAvoy is due to represent Team USA at the Milan Olympics.”
The incident occurred late in the first period when McAvoy, carrying the puck through the neutral zone, was met with an open-ice collision. Vilmanis appeared to leave his feet and make contact with McAvoy’s head using his elbow. McAvoy immediately went and remained down before being helped off by teammates and staff. He headed down the tunnel for further evaluation.
His return status remains unknown, raising concerns given his importance to Boston’s blue line and upcoming selection for Team USA at the Olympics.

Vilmanis received a two-minute minor penalty for an illegal check to the head. Fans and analysts were shocked that the minutes were all he received. However, the 22-year-old Latvian forward—drafted by Florida in 2022 and in his early NHL appearances with limited points this season—did not return to the ice for any subsequent shifts after the play, as the Panthers kept him off the ice. As of this writing, the game is in the middle of the second period, and Vilmanis has only played 2:35.
The Hope Is That McAvoy Will Not Miss Time
The hit comes at the worst time, especially if McAvoy is seriously injured. McAvoy, a key part of the Bruins roster, was set to be a key part of Team USA. He was also injured during the 4 Nations Faceoff tournament, which makes the timing of this incredibly poor.
Updates on McAvoy’s condition are awaited, while Vilmanis’ absence from further play may reflect precautionary measures by Florida’s coaching staff. Whether supplemental discipline follows will be learned in the coming days.
