Breaking: Auston Matthews Leaves Game After Hit From Zadorov
Auston Matthews left Tuesday’s game against the Bruins after a hard second-period hit from Nikita Zadorov.
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews left Tuesday night’s game against the Boston Bruins after taking a heavy hit from defenseman Nikita Zadorov midway through the second period.
Matthews appeared shaken and visibly frustrated, heading straight to the dressing room during a TV timeout. He did not return for the remainder of the period and was last seen leaving the ice at the 11:00 mark.

Before exiting, Matthews logged 10:51 of ice time and didn’t register a shot on goal. The play saw Zadorov angle Matthews into the boards, where he appeared to take the brunt of the impact to his upper body. It didn’t seem as though Matthews fell hard or was blasted into the boards, but it was a hit from behind that caused him to go down awkwardly.

Toronto has not yet provided an official update on his condition.
Matthews, who missed 15 games last season with an upper-body injury, has nine goals and 14 points this season. Any setback would be a significant blow to the Leafs’ offense — and to their hopes of staying competitive in the Atlantic Division. They are already struggling with inconsistent offense. Matthews being out would a brutal loss.
