Blues, Bruins Talking Blockbuster Trade with Respective GMs at Olympics?

Could the St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins be working on a trade while their respective GMs are at the Olympics?

Trade rumors around St. Louis Blues defenseman Justin Faulk are starting to gain momentum as the NHL trade deadline approaches on March 6, 2026. Nothing official is happening during the Olympic break, but that’s not stopping teams from identifying players who may suit their needs for a playoff push. The Boston Bruins have identified the need for an upgrade on the blue line. Faulk might be their guy, and the GMs of the two NHL franchises are working in close quarters these days.

The veteran right-shot defenseman has emerged as a possible fit, due mostly to a report from James Murphy of RG.org, who writes the Bruins have been searching for someone after missing on Rasmus Andersson. They want a proven defenseman with offensive upside.

Faulk, 33 (turning 34 in March), is having a strong season: 11 goals, 19 assists, and 30 points in 57 games. He’s a leader with playoff experience, and he’s in year six of a seven-year, $45.5 million contract with a $6.5 million cap hit. The number is fair given the uptick in salaries and the rising cap, and Faulk isn’t locked in until his late 30s. He has one more year beyond this before becoming a free agent in 2027.

A 15-team no-trade list gives him a say in any potential move, but the Blues are selling and sit well outside the playoff picture.

The Bruins and Blues Could Be Talking at the Olympics

Sources, including David Pagnotta and James Murphy, confirm that Boston’s front office has been actively pursuing the veteran. Seeing as both Bruins’ GM Don Sweeney and Blues GM Doug Armstrong are playing significant roles for Team Canada at the Olympics, there’s plenty of time for the two to talk. Armstrong is the GM, and Sweeney is his assistant. They’re focused on Team Canada, but you know they’re talking NHL business.

While the asking price may be steep, no two GMs have spent more time together working through the complications that might arise in a deal. So too, while Armstrong has said he’d screw over his own mother with an offer sheet if it meant making a good deal, there’s always something to the idea that good friends and co-GMs might give the other a more agreeable option than the general market.

Other teams are also reportedly in the mix, and adding competition could drive the price even higher. That is, assuming the two GMs haven’t hashed out a deal that is ready to go once the Olympic freeze officially ends.

All that said, no deal is imminent… that we know of.
