Panarin Era in New York Over as Rangers Prepare for Blockbuster Trade

The New York Rangers are holding Artemi Panarin out of the lineup as trade talks ramp up before the Olympic roster freeze. Where will he go?

The New York Rangers appear to be on the verge of moving on from one of the greatest free-agent signings in franchise history. Multiple reports indicate Artemi Panarin has likely played his final game in a Rangers uniform, with the team holding him out of the lineup until a trade can be completed ahead of the Feb. 4 Olympic roster freeze.

ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported that sources expect Panarin to be sidelined through the break as the Rangers work to facilitate a deal. Chris Johnston added that the pending unrestricted free agent is seeking a contract extension as part of any trade approval, suggesting Panarin wants long-term security before waiving his rights.

Panarin was held out of Wednesday’s loss to the Islanders for “roster management,” and head coach Mike Sullivan acknowledged the impact of his absence.

“Obviously, Bread is a terrific player… and he’s not an easy guy to replace,” Sullivan said. “It forces all of us to look in the mirror.”

Rangers Motivated to Make a Panarin Move

The Rangers are clearly motivated to act quickly, and teams are circling. Reports suggest the San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, and Los Angeles Kings are legitimate contenders, with San Jose even viewed as a potential extension destination. Sheng Peng writes, “San Jose Hockey Now has learned that the Sharks have inquired about pending UFA winger Artemi Panarin — and that the New York Rangers star would be willing to sign an extension with San Jose.”

Dallas has also been mentioned as a possible fit if Panarin were treated as a pure rental, but insiders believe the Rangers could get a much stronger return from a team willing to extend him.

New York is reportedly open to retaining part of Panarin’s $11.6 million cap hit, but they’re still seeking a significant package — potentially a first-round pick plus a top prospect or young roster player.

Panarin’s legacy in New York is secure. In 482 games with the Rangers, he posted 205 goals, 402 assists, and 607 points, ranking among the franchise’s all-time leaders.

Now, with a major retool underway, the Rangers’ next move appears imminent — and the Panarin era in New York may already be over.
