Are the Calgary Flames Considering Off-The-Radar Forward Trade?
The Flames’ trade rumors continue to ramp up with Ryan Lomberg in the spotlight.
The Calgary Flames are going to be one of the busiest teams at this year’s NHL Trade Deadline. With Rasmus Andersson already shipped to the Vegas Golden Knights, and Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman also in heavy rumors, Craig Conroy will also be looking at other pieces of the roster as potential trade bait. One player that stands out is former Stanley Cup Champion, Ryan Lomberg.
Lomberg was a hot commodity after winning a Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in 2024. It would’ve been easy to stay with the Panthers as their fourth-line/13th forward and win another championship, but he cashed in and took a two-year, $4 million deal with the Flames. After playing 80 games in his first season in Calgary, he is on pace for another 78-game season this year.
The production with the Flames hasn’t been there, but his 20 points in 126 games aren’t why Calgary acquired him. Lomberg’s strength is his ability to get under the other team’s skin while playing under 10 minutes a night on the fourth line. However, when a team is struggling to win games for two consecutive seasons, the point of having a playoff-type player like Lomberg taking up a lineup spot can be lost on fans.
Should the Flames Trade Ryan Lomberg?
It’s why trading Lomberg to a playoff-contender at the trade deadline would be in the best interest of Conroy. A player like Lomberg is still a commodity for those types of teams, as we saw earlier this month when the Boston Bruins pryed a fourth-round pick out of the Anaheim Ducks for Jeffrey Viel, who spent most of his time in Boston in the press box.

If Calgary can get a mid-round draft pick for Lomberg, there’s no reason not to complete that deal. With his contract expiring at the end of the year, the parties could reunite in the offseason if they feel that strongly about keeping the relationship going.
