Alex Ovechkin Climbs Into Top 10 All-Time With Hat Trick Night
Alex Ovechkin scored his 33rd career hat trick and passed Joe Sakic to move into 10th all-time in NHL points with 1,643.
Alex Ovechkin continues to set records and had another incredible outing on Thursday night. The 40-year-old legend dropped his 33rd career hat trick on the Montreal Canadiens and, in the process, officially passed Joe Sakic to move into 10th place on the NHL’s all-time points list with 1,643.
Ovechkin put up three goals on three shots and added an assist to bring the damage to four points, becoming just the sixth player in league history to record a hat trick after turning 40. ESPN Insights notes, “Alex Ovechkin is the second player in NHL history with six goals in a four-game span at age 40 or older. Teemu Selanne did it in March 2011.”
He’s now sitting on six goals in his last four games and seven in his last six. He’s suddenly within four goals of the NHL lead. He’s got 907 in his career and 10 on the season, with 20 points in 21 games.

Another record, another milestone, another reminder that Alex Ovechkin isn’t done rewriting history.
