3 Flyers Seen as Untouchable in Quinn Hughes Trade Talks
The Philadelphia Flyers would love to add Quinn Hughes, but not at the expense of these three players they see as key to their future.
The odds of Quinn Hughes leaving the Vancouver Canucks seem to increase with every loss, and his recent body language suggests that his mind is already drifting towards that possibility. It’s hard to blame him, given all of the speculation and rumors about his next potential destination, which has expanded beyond just the obvious answer that is the New Jersey Devils to play with his brothers, Jack and Luke.
A Metropolitan Division rival of those Devils, the Philadelphia Flyers, has emerged as a suitor in recent weeks, thanks to Hughes’ connection to former head coach Rick Tocchet. The organization has plenty of assets to pull off a potential blockbuster deal.
However, it turns out that three of those assets are off-limits, as team reporter Brandon J. Sommermann recently emphasized that Matvei Michkov, Tyson Foerster, and Porter Martone will not be a part of any trade discussions.
“Don’t know how many times this has to be said, but let’s say it again… The Flyers will NOT move any of Matvei Michkov, Tyson Foerster, or Porter Martone for Quinn Hughes. The trio is seen internally as their building blocks at forward for the future, 3/4 Top6 wingers,”
The 26-year-old Hughes is well known to be in the fifth season of the six-year, $47.1 million extension he signed with the Canucks back in 2021, eligible to hit free agency after the 2026-27 campaign.
You’re Not Getting Quinn Hughes for Pennies on the Dollar
Philadelphia, like every other team in the NHL, will, of course, have a ton of interest in acquiring Hughes, but if they truly want to be in contention to land him, they’ll have to pony up.
This is the second-best defenseman and one of the 10 best players in the world we’re talking about; almost anything should be on the table in a trade.

Michkov is understandable, given that he’s who they hope becomes the face of the franchise and a true superstar. However, if guys like Foerster and Martone are also off limits, then the Flyers are going to have a tough time even coming close to pulling off a deal for Hughes.
If the reports are accurate, then the Devils and Detroit Red Wings, among others, will be licking their chops knowing they have one less team to deal with in their pursuit of the 2023-24 Norris Trophy winner.
