Tkachuk Tells Flames He Won’t Re-Sign, Has List of Trade Options

Matthew Tkachuk has informed the Calgary Flames he is unwilling to sign long-term and has offered a list of preferred trade destinations.

According to Haily Salvian and Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic, Matthew Tkachuk has, in fact, informed the Calgary Flames that he has no intention of re-signing a long-term deal with the organization and is working with the club to help facilitate a trade. The hockey scribes report that Tkachuk has not officially requested a trade, but he has offered up a list of cities he’s willing to be traded to and would consider signing a long-term deal with.

Tkachuk has told management that a long-term deal is out of the question and has given the organization a list of clubs he would be willing to be traded to. Among them, he’s listed the St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators, and Dallas Stars. New Jersey and the New York Rangers are also among the other teams that have expressed interest in the past but it’s not clear if he’d be willing to sign a long-term deal with either of those organizations.

This news explains the Flames’ decision to elect for salary arbitration with the player just the other day. It removed the risk of an offer sheet, but more than that, gives the team more time to talk to these destinations and work out the logistics of a trade. That Tkachuk has five teams listed is good news for the Flames, if there’s a silver lining here. It gives the team options and doesn’t handcuff them to making a deal with only one team.

At this point, the options are a sign and trade or trading him first and letting the team who acquires him work out the details on an extension. Tkachuk is bound to hold firm and get at least $9 million per season on an eight-year term with any club that is interested in signing him.

Expect to go down before the July 27th and August 11th window of arbitration. That means a deal could happen as early as this week. While this is unfortunate news for the Flames, it does at least put an end to speculation about Tkachuk’s future and gives Calgary options. They are guaranteed to get something in return, versus allowing the player to walk for nothing like Johnny Gaudreau did.

Very dangerous precedent being established here in the NHL. There were always have and have not clubs but now beyond financial mite a new developing dynamic has entered. The great resignation in its own form is appearing in the NHL with American players heading south. Future drafts will be altered by this trend no doubt. Teams best be forewarned.
