Oilers May Have to Make Tough Decision Regarding Philip Broberg Trade

If it meant adding a significant piece at the trade deadline, would the Edmonton Oilers be willing to move Philip Broberg?

According to Allan Mithcle of The Athletic, if the Edmonton Oilers intend to make an impact trade at some point before the March 21st NHL trade deadline, the team will likely have to decide if they are willing to trade Philip Broberg. The defense prospect is viewed as a future NHL regular with a high ceiling, but it’s believed he’ll be the ask from another team if a deal is to be made.

Mitchell writes, “The young Swede has been so impressive it’s difficult to imagine trade talk without him at the deadline.” This will be a massive issue for the Oilers for two reasons. First, they would prefer not to move the defenseman if they don’t have to. They’ve been patient, invested a lot of time in his development and it’s finally starting to pay off. Second, the Oilers will actually need Broberg. GM Ken Holland recently said that Broberg will be called back up to the NHL after the holiday break because the team’s left side is depleted. Darnell Nurse, Duncan Keith, Kris Russell, and Markus Niemeläinen are all out, either thanks to injuries or COVID protocol.

Mitchell adds that Broberg was expected to spend the entire season in Bakersfield of the AHL his speed and skill have been obvious, as has the Oilers’ need to use him. If that continues, it’s hard to imagine Holland being willing to give up a useful left-shot defenseman, when the Oilers need a useful left-shot defenseman.

The only reason Broberg would likely be in the discussion is if a better, more NHL-ready and playoff-producing defenseman were to come in. This is why the Oilers have been linked to a name like Jakob Chychryun. The dilemma becomes, how much better is Chychrun than Broberg and how much value is created by keeping Broberg on an entry-level contract for years versus adding Chychrun’s $4.6 million for a few more seasons.

If the Oilers elect not to go that route and aren’t eager to trade Broberg, the expectation is that Holland will have to move the team’s first-round draft selection to get what he needs.
