Oilers Beat Flames In 5: Crazy Series Ends In Crazy Fashion

The Edmonton Oilers have defeated the Calgary Flames in five games and will go to the Western Conference Finals.

What else could the series between the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers offer that it already hadn’t in the first four games? Game 5 clearly proved the fans hadn’t seen everything yet.

The Oilers won in five games but this series against the Flames felt a lot closer than it ended up being. Calgary battled hard and gave the Oilers all they could handle, but the skill and determination by Edmonton and two of the best players in the world took over and put things away.

This series had everything:

  • 17 points for Leon Draisaitl in five games is a new record for points in a playoff series and he did so on one good foot.
  • McDavid didn’t get on the scoresheet in a Game 5, until overtime when he won with his goal that ended the series.
  • A disallowed goal that will be talked about in Calgary for weeks (maybe months), saw Blake Coleman’s third-period goal called back on a controversial call. When the game was deemed still 4-4, the Oilers started to tilt the ice in their favor.
  • Game 5 offered a series in the second period that included four goals in 1:11. That’s an NHL record.
  • Game 4 included a 130-foot short-handed goal
  • Multiple games saw the two teams combine for 15 goals.

Needless to say, this was the most entertaining series in these Stanley Cup Playoffs by a wide margin. For the Oilers, it’s only the halfway marker to what they ultimately want to be. For the Flames, it will be start of some very difficult decisions.

The Oilers will now move on to face either the Colorado Avalanche or the St. Louis Blues but will get a few days to rest and let a few of the injuries that have been bugging some of the key players on the team rest. To go along with Draisaitl’s record-breaking points feat, McDavid now has 27 points in 12 games in the playoffs. Evander Kane has 12 goals.
