Oilers Activate Key D-Man Off Injury Reserve, Walman Back This Week

Jake Walman is back with the Oilers. Discover how his return impacts the lineup and defensive strategies against the Senators.

The Edmonton Oilers announced Monday that defenceman Jake Walman has been activated off injured reserve.Walman is expected to pair with Darnell Nurse on the blue line and could be in the lineup as early as Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators.

Walman’s return will likely trigger some lineup changes, with either Troy Stecher or Ty Emberson potentially making way. There is talk that one of these two players could be placed on waivers or traded as the Oilers are tight against the cap and their roster limit. Alec Regula being on injured reserve gives Edmonton some time to work things out, but Regula is close to returning, which means some tough decisions are coming.

The Oilers have missed Walman’s presence since preseason, as his recovery timeline was repeatedly pushed back. Head coach Kris Knoblauch initially hoped Walman would debut in the season opener. His repeated delays created some concern about the severity of his injury issue.

The Oilers current road trip has been challenging, with the Oilers sitting at 2-3-1, struggling with execution and team cohesion. Walman’s return should strengthen their transition game and defensive stability.

Walman recently signed a seven-year, $7 million per season extension, making his health and availability a key factor in the team’s long-term plans.
