NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Jan 24), Flames stay in playoff hunt, Oilers beat the Canucks, Capitals win and Ovechkin scores again

Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 24). Each morning, we will bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL. In today’s roundup, the Flames remain in the playoff hunt with a win over the Sabres. The Canucks suffer an embarrassing loss to the Oilers, and Alex Ovechkin scores again to get one closer to the Great One, Wayne Gretzky.

Flames Beat Sabres 5-2, Huberdeau, Kadri Lead Offense

The Calgary Flames beat the Buffalo Sabres by a score of 5-2. It was the fifth win for the Flames in their last seven games. Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri each scored a goal and added two assists in the win. Jakob Pelletier scored the game-winner as the Flames came from behind to steal the win in the third period. With the win, Dustin Wolf is 12-2-1 with a 1.98 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage in 14 home starts.

Oilers Cruise to Easy 6-2 Win Over Canucks

Even without Connor McDavid, who’s serving his suspension for cross-checking, the Edmonton Oilers dominated the Vancouver Canucks 6-2. Zach Hyman scored twice and added an assist in the Oilers’ big win. Once again, the Canucks struggled in loss.

For the Canucks, defenseman Quinn Hughes reached the 40-assist mark for the fourth straight season. By doing so, he passed Dennis Kearns (three from 1975-76 – 1977-78) for the most consecutive seasons by a defenseman in Canucks history.

Ovechkin Scores 875th Career Goal: Capitals Shut Out Kraken 3-0

Both the Washington Capitals and star Alex Ovechkin are hot. Ovechkin scored his 875th goal, and the Capitals extended their winning streak to six games. Ovechkin’s empty-netter sealed the deal of a 3-0 shutout win over Kraken. The Capitals dominated from start to finish.

The Capitals pushed their point streak this season to 12 games (9-0-3) and have posted only two longer streaks during the past decade (14 games in 2016-17 and 13 games in 2019-20). For fans following Ovechkin’s chase of Wayne Gretzky’s goal total, he’s on pace to score No. 895 on April 10 versus the Carolina Hurricanes.
