NHL to Investigate Evander Kane for Gambling on Sharks Games

The NHL will be investigating allegations made against forward Evander Kane that he’s been gambling on San Jose Sharks games.

The NHL has announced they will look into allegations against San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane after his wife posted social media updates suggesting he was betting on and potentially fixing games in which he was involved for the Sharks. While there might be nothing to the allegations, the league has decided not to take any chances.

A series of posts by the NHL Public Relations social media account note:

The League was made aware this evening of a post on social media alleging that San Jose Sharks Player Evander Kane bet on NHL games. The integrity of our game is paramount and the League takes these allegations very seriously. We intend to conduct a full investigation and will have no further comment at this time.

The Sharks also released a statement after the allegations surfaced saying they would be in full cooperation with the league and wanted a fully transparent investigation to ensure the integrity of the game. They wrote: “The San Jose Sharks have been in contact today with the NHL about the serious allegations made against Evander Kane.  We support a full and transparent investigation into the situation to maintain the integrity of the game and consistency with our team values.”

All of this came to light amidst reports that date back to last year where Kane was struggling financially and is being sued by a number of creditors. Kane’s financial problems and an apparent gambling issue have been well documented and the forward is millions of dollars in debt and filed for bankruptcy, despite earning more than $50 million as an NHL player.

His wife Anna Kane (as it is believed to be), took to social media and shared a series of posts showing email or text conversations between herself and Evander where he asked that she be out of their house, that he’s been neglecting his wife and kids and partying all the time without any regard for the damage he’s doing. In a later post she asked how the NHL can “allow a compulsive gambling addict still play when he’s obviously throwing games with bookies to win money? Hmm maybe someone needs to address this.” She also said, “Can someone ask Gary Bettman how they can let a player gamble on his own games? Bet and win with bookies on his own games?”

This Doesn’t Look Good for Kane

While these are merely allegations as this point and the NHL will be looking into the validity of the statements, this is just another chapter in the story that is the potential downfall of Kane as an NHL star. His financial issues are only a drop in the bucket to the problems he’ll have if it’s learned he’s gambling on his own games.

Remember, there is absolutely no evidence that has been publicly provided by the accuser to support the allegations. At this point, it’s simply a she said statement that may have no merit to it at all. Evander Kane has not released any comments on the matter.
