Maple Leafs Trade Alex Biega to Predators for Future Considerations

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Alex Biega to the Nashville Predators ahead of Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline. A depth defenceman who has been one of the more reliable blueliners with the Toronto Marlies, Biega will get a bit more of a chance to play meaningful minutes with the Predators.

Potentially a move to create contract space, Biega is on a one-year, two-way contract with the Leafs this season which pays him $750,000 at the NHL level. He spent the bulk of the 2021-22 season with the Marlies, and had one goal and seven points. He went pointless in the two games he played for the Maple Leafs.

At 33, Biega is not young. He is trending downward in his NHL career and will become an unrestricted free agent at year’s end. The Maple Leafs don’t have many contracts left to give out and the team has learned that Rasmus Sandin’s injury is going to be weeks, not days long. There are also questions about Jake Muzzin’s status and Ondrej Kase’s head injury.
