Maple Leafs Sign Sandin: How the Tricky Deal Finally Got Done

The Toronto Maple Leafs had to work hard to get the Rasmus Sandin deal done, but it ultimately got done. Now what?

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenceman Rasmus Sandin to a two-year contract, the team announced on Thursday. While a great thing for the organization and a deal (two years x $1.4 million per season) that is fair, it was taking far too long to get done. It took the player finally reaching out to end a stalemate and get the two sides on the same page again. With the deal ultimately finished, there are questions about what comes next.

Elliotte Friedman wondered if Sandin would try to squeeze the team after all their blueline injuries left them a bit exposed and potentially with less leverage, Sandin instead seems to have seen this as an opportunity. He’ll get a shot to show the club what he can do when elevated into a higher position and that could mean more responsibility as the season rolls along. Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports, “Rasmus Sandin and his agent Lewis Gross reached out to Leafs GM Kyle Dubas early this morning and expressed a desire to end the contract stalemate. Leafs stood firm on $1.4M AAV. With injuries on Leafs’ blue-line, Sandin felt the pull to end the stalemate.”

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff writes, “In last days, #Leafs made it clear to Rasmus Sandin’s camp that they were not going above the AAV paid to Timothy Liljegren at $1.4m. After [Sean] Durzi contract, Sandin ask was $1.6 million. They compromise in the end, with a two-year deal: $1.4m AAV and second year at $1.6m for QO purposes.”

GM Kyle Dubas said of the deal, “We appreciate Rasmus and his camp taking that step today to get this contract done and allow him the time to ready for the final preseason games.” Head coach Sheldon Keefe said, “It goes without saying, there would be a tremendous opportunity.” Now its up to Sandin to prove he’s got the skill he thinks he does.

What’s Next In Toronto? Is a Trade a Must?

Now that the Leafs are over the cap, should they want to sign a player like Zach Aston-Reese, the club might have to make an additional move. They’ll have a full roster and be over the ceiling. Does that mean waivers or a trade? Either way, it could mean a decent player shakes loose out of the Maple Leafs organization.
