Maple Leafs Sign Jimmy Vesey to 1-Yr $900K Deal

The Maple Leafs have signed another player on Sunday, this time inking forward Jimmy Vesey to a one-year deal worth $900K. If nothing else, he can compete for third line minutes and at worst, should be a decent offensive fourth liner.

The knock on Vesey is his lack of defensive play, which has been a real problem in his career. This is now his third team in four seasons. That said, he has scored at the NHL level, posting a 16 goal season and two 17 goal seasons. The Sabres certainly thought he was worth something. On two occasions, they traded a 3rd to the Rangers for for him, then paid him $2.35 million.

The 27-year-old recorded 20 points in 60 games for the Buffalo Sabres last season. In 304 NHL games with the Sabres and New York Rangers, the former third-round pick has collected 110 points. He’s been able to stay healthy for 300 NHL games, and he’s 6’3″.

After signing Vesey the Maple Leafs have $2.0 million in cap space with 20 players under contract. (12F/6D/2G). They still have Travis Dermott, Ilay Mikheyev, and Joey Anderson to sign.
