Latest on Klingberg’s Contract Status With the Dallas Stars

John Klingberg says he wants to stay with the Dallas Stars and sign an extension, but how likely is it that actually happens?

Defenseman John Klingberg said he wants to re-sign and remain with the Dallas Stars next season. Considering it wasn’t long ago he wanted out and felt disrespected by the lack of contract talks between the two sides, it’s a major shift in thinking that, frankly, might have come just a little bit too late.

The Stars are an organization in transition. They are moving away from older players like Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, Klingberg and Alexander Radulov and putting their time, energy and money into the new core that consists of Miro Heiskanen, Jake Oettinger, Roope Hintz, and Jason Robertson. Klingberg would be welcomed back if he were to take a short-term deal for less money, but despite Klingberg’s desire to stay, that’s unlikely.

During Tuesday’s season-ending meetings with the media, he said that his priority is to stay. He noted, “At the end of the day, I always want to stay here. We’ve been trying to find different ways to get it done. Year length, money-wise, just trying to get something we’re both happy with.” GM Jim Nill said something similar, but seemed to lean more towards the idea that Klingberg might be on his way out, or at the very least, the Stars aren’t budgin on their offer and Klingberg will have to come down to meet them where they’re at.

Nill noted, “John has an opportunity to be a free agent, and I don’t blame him. … It all depends on term and money. He knows where we’re at, I know where he’s at. He’s earned this right, and I give him full credit for that.”

Klingberg Simply Doesn’t Fit When Looking At All Factors

If you move beyond the fact the Stars are going to spend money on the younger core, you also have to consider that they’ve already committed money to older players who are still under contract. Esa Lindell, and Ryan Suter still have at least three more seasons on their deals and the Stars aren’t likely to trade one of them to make room for Klingberg who will probably get offers closer to what he wants in free agency.

The Seattle Kraken are a team that many believe will be serious players for Klingberg’s services and the Stars aren’t likely to match that offer. It will be up to Klingberg to decide how badly he wants to stay in Dallas. He says he wants to stay, but does he want to stay enough to take a discount and play less of a role on a team that is moving in a different direction?
