Latest on Evander Kane’s Scary Injury During Oilers vs. Lightning Game

It sounds like Evander Kane is going to be ok after a scary incident with a skate cutting his wrist sent him immediately to the hospital.

A scary incident took place on Tuesday night as the Edmonton Oilers were trying to pick up a win versus the Tampa Bay Lightning. Evander Kane went down in a bit of a scrum and while down, Patrick Maroon inadvertently skated into Kane’s exposed wrist, slicing into it and sending the Oilers’ forward off the ice in an immediate panic when the blood began to quickly pour out onto the ice. Sportsnet’s Gene Principe announced during the game that Kane immediately knew the injury was bad and yelled, “Help, help!” as he quickly skated toward the Oilers’ bench and medical staff.

The game was paused and all parties were concerned as the cut was in a scary and potentially threatening location. The positive news is that Kane is in stable condition as Principe offered an update from GM Ken Holland: “He has a deep cut on his wrist. He was stabilized and has gone to the hospital. Kane will have surgery on his wrist. He will be OK.”

The footage of the incident is below. ** Warning: the footage is somewhat graphic and potentially sensitive.

Kane was transported to a local Florida hospital for a procedure later on Tuesday evening. Tom Gazolla of TSN 1260 notes, “Depending on the severity of Kane’s injury and length of time he misses, Oilers likely to call up multiple players. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Klim Kostin one of them.”

Head coach Jay Woodcroft said following the Oilers’ win: “First and foremost everyone on our team, in our organization, probably most people in Edmonton are thinking of Evander Kane. When an accident like that happens on the ice, that’s where our first thought is. It’s never fun to see one of your teammates in that position.” Patrick Maroon was asked after the game for a breakdown from his perspective and noted that it was a scary situation. He said, “I hope he’s OK. When you look down and you see that much blood, you know that there’s something wrong … the boys are really worried about him so we’re all thinking about Evander.”

Dangerous Game Where Bad Things Can Happen

No one is to blame for the incident and it’s one of those unfortunate fluke plays that, frankly, shockingly doesn’t happen more often. Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid was asked about the injury and explained that it’s a fast game. He said the Oilers players were talking in the room how crazy it is and that pucks are flying around 100 miles an hour and guys are flying around on little knives. “It’s a crazy game out there,” he noted.

The good news is that Kane will seemingly be ok. As for how much time he’ll miss, that’s yet to be determined but it could be significant.
