Kraken Send Pitlick to Flames for First Trade in Franchise History

The Seattle Kraken made their first ever trade on Thursday, sending forward Tyler Pitlick to the Calgary Flames.

The Seattle Kraken have made their first ever trade in franchise history on Thursday, sending forward Tyler Pitlick to the Calgary Flames in exchange for a fourth-round pick at the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

This trade comes just one day after the Kraken selected Pitlick from the Arizona Coyotes in their expansion draft. The 29-year-old suite dup for 38 games last season in his first and only year in the desert, registering six goals and 11 points.

When Pitlick was originally drafted by the Oilers in the second-round (31 overall) in the 2010 draft, the hope was that he would become a top six forward who could provide plenty of offence at the NHL level. Unfortunately, injuries hampered his development and at times had many questioning whether he could be an NHL player at all. Since then, he has had to adapt his style of game and has turned into a physical force who plays primarily on teams third or fourth lines, a role he is likely to continue with the Flames.

Pitlick has played in a total of 286 NHL games to this point, combined between the Oilers, Dallas Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Coyotes. In those 286 games he has managed to score 47 goals while adding 84 points along with 78 penalty minutes. This past season saw him average 16:22 in ice time per game, which is by far the highest of his career.

As for the Flames, they will hope that Pitlick is part of the solution to turn things around after a very disappointing 2020-21 season which saw them finish fifth place in the North Division and miss the playoffs completely after entering the year with what most viewed as a promising roster. He certainly won’t be the only change to the Flames , who are reportedly considering many options this summer, but will boost their bottom six and help out on the penalty kill, something in which he led all Coyotes forwards in ice time on last season. He has one more season remaining on a two-year contract that carries a cap hit of $1.75 million.
