Kings Sign Anderson to Long Term Extension

On Wednesday afternoon, the Los Angeles Kings announced that they have signed defenseman Mikey Anderson to an eight-year extension.

The Los Angeles Kings got a key piece of their blue line locked in on Wednesday afternoon, as it was announced that defenseman Mikey Anderson has been signed to an eight-year, $33 million deal that will carry an average annual value (AAV) of $4.125 million.

This deal seems to be fair for both sides, as the 23-year-old Anderson gets full term, while the Kings were likely able to shave some dollars off of the AAV as a result. While many may be somewhat surprised to see a relatively unknown player in Anderson get a deal like this, they won’t be for long if they make an effort to watch him in the near future.

While Anderson isn’t known for his offense, proven by his 13 points on the year, he has turned into one of the NHL’s more underrated shutdown defenders. Kings coach Todd McLellan has come to realize that, and has the young blue liner playing nearly 22 minutes a night as a result. It isn’t just McLellan that is a fan of his game, either, as general manager Rob Blake made it clear how excited the organization as a whole is to get him locked up.

“We’re excited to have a player of Mikey Anderson’s caliber signed to the Kings long-term,” Blake said. “Mikey has not only developed into a trusted, shut-down player on the ice, but a well-respected individual in the room that we envision continuing to grow into our leadership core.”

Anderson is one of several young players on the Kings that helps prove just how good the organizations scouting staff is. Heading into his draft year back in 2017, he recorded a modest 34 points in 54 games with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League. Despite the somewhat mediocre stat line, the Kings chose to select him in the fourth-round (103 overall) and are now reaping the rewards. He figures to be a key piece on what is expected to be a dominant Kings team in the coming years.
