Is a Jonathan Toews Trade Request Out of Chicago Coming?

Is Jonathan Toews gearing up to ask for a trade out of Chicago this summer? His comments seem to suggest he’s tired and frustrated.

Based upon the way Jonathan Toews has ripped into the Chicago Blackhawks organization of late and his willingness to repeatedly question management and his own teammates, don’t be surprised if the veteran forward decides he’s had enough and asks for a trade out of the Windy City.

Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times recently wrote about Toews’ growing frustration with the organization in which he’s spent the entirety of his NHL career. While he’s not the player he once was, Toews has always been known as a fierce competitor and a leader both on and off the ice. His recent comments suggest he doesn’t see a similar drive in the players on his team or within his organization.

Pope quotes Toews who recently made comments like, “Across the board, these last few outings have been pretty embarrassing. The effort wasn’t there. There’s no connection in our team game. There’s no valuing what we have and what we get to play for our fans.” He added the team has held meeting after meeting about the subject and nothing seems to matter or make a dent. Toews added, “We get to play for the Blackhawks in front of 20,000 people in Chicago. Why would you check out ever? I don’t think that should be an issue.”

That he’s suggesting it is an issue, while his coach offers reasons behind these multiple meetings (a new, young team that isn’t winning), the bigger picture here seems to be that Toews and the Blackhawks are on two different pages at this point in his career. He’s not shaken the feeling that his team should always be competitive. The organization understands there will be a lot more losing before there is more winning.

Toews Wants to Be in the Loop

Because of this, Pope wonders if it would be best for both sides to find a change of scenery next season. Toews hasn’t officially requested a trade but there’s some chatter he might soon enough. He’s requested more meetings with the GM to better understand his role and what the team is really trying to accomplish. If he doesn’t see it being a good role for him, no one should be shocked if he wants out and even fewer fans should be surprised if the Blackhawks try to accommodate that request.
