Hyman Comments On Signing With Oilers For 7 Years

Zach Hyman spoke with the Oilers media after signing with the team for seven seasons. He’s extremely excited about what the Oilers can do.

Zach Hyman spoke with the media after the announcement of his signing with the Edmonton Oilers became official. Saying he couldn’t be more excited to join the team, he believes the Oilers are the best situation to develop his career and once the door closed on the Toronto Maple Leafs, he knew Edmonton was the right fit and not a single person he spoke to about the organization or the city said a negative thing.

Hyman signed for seven years and a $38.5 million contract. He tweeted, “Let’s go Edmonton!!! Extremely excited to be joining Oil Country!.” He noted during his media call, “The most important thing for me was to go to a team that has an opportunity to win.” Some fans will joke that maybe this isn’t it because, like Toronto, the Oilers haven’t been able to get out of the first round of the playoffs. Still, the team has made significant changes to their roster over the past few days and weeks.

Edmonton added Duncan Keith to the left side of their defense. They lost Adam Larsson and replaced him with Cody Ceci. They traded Ethan Bear for Warren Foegele and re-signed Tyson Barrie. Now, it will be a matter of what happens with their goaltending.

The deal has a full no-move clause in the first five years and a modified no-trade in the last two years. Hyman mentioned that he’s looking forward to trying to mesh with a player like Connor McDavid. “If I can create space for him, everyone in the world knows what he’s capable of doing.” Hyman says his job is to try and get him second and third opportunities.

As for what kind of person the Oilers are getting, it was clear from his media call that Hyman is a smart, well-spoken individual. He’s got three published books, has started a gaming company and seems to completely understand what he’s signing up for. “It’s so important to be a multi-faceted individual because the hockey season, as we all know, is a rollercoaster. Sometimes you need an outlet.”
