How Much is Your Hockey Fandom Worth?: This Quiz Will Tell You

Because the sports industry is booming and only growing, did you know that your hockey fandom is actually worth a lot of money?

It doesn’t only have to be the athletes who get paid.

According to recent research, the sports industry is worth more than $400 billion per year and it’s only growing. A study conducted by the Business Research Company demonstrates that “The global sports market reached a value of nearly $388.3 billion in 2020, having increased at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4% since 2015.” While things understandably took a bit of a dip when the pandemic hit, the sports industry is rebounding in a major way, and legalized sports betting, a renewed interest in collectibles, digital products, and huge television deals with global reach on smartphones and mobile devices have only helped scale the industry in multiple ways.

For example, research estimates the Sports NFT Market was valued at $2.6 billion in 2022. Forecasts suggest it could reach $41.6 billion by 2032. That’s a 16X growth in just 10 years. Virtual reality is hitting the scene and expanding reach, sports franchises are experimenting with different ways to present their game, and big league teams are officially creating partnerships with sports card companies and betting sites in a way they never have in history. For example, Globe Newswire notes: “The Fantasy Sports Market is valued at USD 21. 39 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach USD 44. 07 billion, with an estimated CAGR of 12. 92% over the forecast period of 2022-2027.”

The spectator section of sports is growing too. One study notes that “The market — which totaled $127.04 billion in 2021 — is set to grow to $181.47 billion by the end of 2022. That’s a compound annual growth rate of 42.8%.,” It adds, “By 2026, the market could reach $272 billion, with a CAGR of 10.6%.”

Specifically, when it comes to hockey, the NHL is already committed to growing the game, even if more teams won’t be joining the league anytime soon. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said, “he sees the NHL increasing its commitment to playing games overseas, staging international events and investing in grassroots programs as soon as it can considering the COVID-19 pandemic.” Jersey and helmet logos are a thing, as is legalized betting. It’s all growing, and at a rapid pace.

So, that leads us to only one question as fans… ‘Can we get in on this?’

The answer is a resounding, “Yes!” There are a number of ways fans can make a solid income from their knowledge about the sports they love and the teams they watch. There’s writing, podcasting, video creation, collecting and investing, buying and selling, marketing and hosting live events, plus so much more.
