Insider Talks Noticeable Change in Marner’s Game Under Berube

The Toronto Maple Leafs Mitch Marner is playing the best hockey at his career. To what extent does that fall on Coach Craig Berube?

In a recent discussion on the FAN Hockey Show, Luke Fox discussed whether Mitch Marner has grown as a player under the guidance of Craig Berube. He compared this growth to his time under former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe. Fox highlighted Marner’s remarkable start to the season and explored how Berube’s coaching philosophy may influence the star winger’s game.

Marner’s Fantastic Start to the Season

Fox pointed out that Marner is off to one of the best starts of his career. He’s put up 38 points in 27 games. He’s tied for third in assists and fifth in points league-wide, showcasing his elite playmaking ability.

This isn’t just about the numbers, though. Fox emphasized that Marner’s all-around game has reached new heights. He’s creating chances and stepping up as a shooter, particularly on the power play. “I never thought I’d see Mitch Marner shooting with more emphasis from the top of the point on the power play—but here we are,” Fox remarked.

What’s Different for Marner By Playing Under Berube?

According to Fox, there’s a noticeable edge to Marner’s game under Berube’s coaching this season. Beyond his offensive contributions, Marner has added grit and physicality. That has been evidenced by moments like his confrontation with Nashville’s Zachary L’Heureux. “There’s just something different about Mitch Marner,” Fox noted, adding that this season offers a chance to see Marner at the peak of his powers with a new coach.

Fox also highlighted how Berube has encouraged Marner to shoot more often, though he still believes there’s room for further improvement. Marner has become a driver of any Maple Leafs line he plays on. By doing so, he’s elevated his teammates and excelled in all situations—whether on the power play or penalty kill.

How Does Marner’s Stellar Play Address the Contract Question?

While Marner’s performance this season for the Maple Leafs has been stellar, Fox raised questions about the financial implications of his next contract. With his current deal expiring soon, Marner could command a significant raise—potentially upwards of $13–14 million annually.

Fox suggested the Maple Leafs might benefit from a “wait-and-see” approach, mainly to evaluate how Marner performs in the playoffs. “It’s not that I think Marner can’t do it in the playoffs,” Fox said, “but committing such a large portion of the salary cap to a few players makes it difficult to build a complete roster.”

The Bottom Line: Is This Marner’s Best Season Yet?

Under Craig Berube, the Maple Leafs Marner has arguably reached a new level in his game this season. His offensive production, increased physicality, and versatility make him invaluable to the Maple Leafs. However, as Fox pointed out, his postseason performance and looming contract negotiations could shape the next chapter of his career in Toronto.

If Marner continues to shine and proves himself in the playoffs, the Maple Leafs may have no choice. They’ll happily lock him up as one of the NHL’s highest-paid players. For now, fans can savor watching Marner thrive under Berube’s leadership as he cements himself as one of the league’s elite stars.
