Getzlaf Was Willing to Be Traded If It Helped Ducks Rebuild

Ducks GM said Ryan Getzlaf was willing to accept a trade if the team thought it would help with their rebuild.

Ryan Getzlaf is a real team player, according to Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray. Murray spoke with the media after the trade deadline and when asked about how close he might have coming to moving the veteran forward at the NHL Trade Deadline, it really wasn’t close.

There was talk that a team or two might have shown a little interest, among them the Vegas Golden Knights. Ultimately, Getzlaf stayed put. Murray said that the player did come to him and offer to be moved if the GM thought it would help the rebuild and Murray appreciated the gesture.

“Getzy and I had numerous discussions about his future, and to his credit, most of the discussions were about the future of this organization,” said Murray. The GM went on to say that Getzlaf approached him and said, “Look, if you think there’s something there that will help us tremendously going forward, he would have gone somewhere, he would have done it. We narrowed it down and talked, it just wasn’t there.”

Murray said he had a specific price in mind that would even create a situation where a future discussion would be required. It did not come to fruition.

What’s Next for Getzlaf?

While willing to help out his team, there will be many questions about what’s next for the veteran forward and whether or not he’ll stay put or seek out a contract elsewhere. It appears the Ducks are keen to keep him and it would make sense that Getzlaf might sign one-year deals to finish out his career and give the team more flexibility moving forward, should they find themselves in a similar position again next season.

Clearly, it will be at a lower price point and while Getzlaf is getting older, he could be a useful asset for a competitive team on the playoff drive next season.
