Dubois Says He Could See Himself Sticking With Jets

Pierre-Luc Dubois says he could see himself in Winnipeg despite only signing his qualifying offer and rumors of his desire to be a UFA.

There is a good chunk of the fan base in Winnipeg thinking that a Pierre-Luc Dubois exit out of town is only a matter of time. Outsiders looking at the Jets situation tend to agree, but the player himself keeps saying that he hasn’t made up his mind and could see himself remaining with the organization long-term.

The most recent time Dubois talked about his future was this week with Darren Dreger of TSN. During that interview, Dubois was asked point blank about his decision to sign a qualifying offer instead of committing to the team long-term when they were willing and preferred to go that route. The assumption by many is that he’s walking himself into unrestricted free agency, and while that may be true, Dubois is contending that it doesn’t mean he sees no future with the Jets.

Dubois said he could himself staying long-term. He explained:

I could see myself in Winnipeg in the future. Just this summer I didn’t have the answer. Everyone wants an answer immediately, that’s kind of the world we’re in. But it’s my life at the end of the day. It is a decision that six, seven, eight years is a long time to bring me toward the end of my career. It’s not just me, it’s also a family that I have. It is a big decision that this past summer I wasn’t ready to make.

Considering all the changeover that has happened in Winnipeg and the lack of success the club has had compared to expectations, it’s not hard to see why Dubois wants to see how things play out. When you also consider that his financial situation gives him leverage if he waits, perhaps fans shouldn’t have expected any other decision than the one he made.

The good news is, Dubois already sees things turning in a positive direction. He noted that things feel different already in Winnipeg and when he said it, he meant better.
