DeBrusk Comments On Disappointment of Not Being Traded By Bruins

Jake DeBrusk is disappointed he wasn’t traded at the NHL Trade Deadline but he’ll try to make the most of his playoff opportunity.

In the early hours of Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline, Jake DeBrusk was signed to a two-year extension with the Boston Bruins. Some wondered if that meant he and the team were back on the same page and had ironed out their differences. Most believed the new deal was a precursor to him potentially being traded. A trade didn’t go down and both DeBrusk and his agent expressed their disappointment that trying to make it easier for other teams to acquire him didn’t work.

While he’s $8 million richer, DeBrusk said, “Definitely a difficult day… Difficult week.” He also added, “I’m on a very good line right now and I’ll do whatever I can to stay there. It’s all about winning the Stanley Cup.” In other words, DeBrusk is happy to do his part and play his role to the best of his ability until the end of the season. Once the Bruins either win it all or get eliminated, he’s still looking to be traded.

DeBrusk did say it was nice to have the pressure off of what was going to come next. With the deadline now gone, he knows he’ll be finishing his season with the Bruins and can put the rest aside until the offseason.

What Is Next for DeBrusk?

At this point, all the forward can do is play his best and show another team that the two-year extension he signed is a value contract. If he posts good numbers during the final 20 games of the regular season and contributes during the playoffs, his plan to give teams some security knowing what he’ll make the next two seasons may pay off, even if it didn’t on Monday.

The worst-case scenario for DeBrusk is that he cools off offensively the rest of the way. If that happens, few teams are going to be interested in his two-year deal and he’ll likely be stuck in Boston a lot longer than he’d hoped.
