Crosby, McDavid and Pietrangelo Named to Canada’s 2022 Olympic Team

Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid and Alex Pietrangelo have been named to Canada’s Men’s Olympic 2022 hockey team.

While the initial rosters aren’t due until October 15th, three of the 22 skaters (14 forwards, eight defensemen) that will be named the 2022 Mens’ Canadian Olympic roster have been named. Team Canada GM Doug Armstrong has named Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, and Alex Pietrangelo to the men’s 2022 Olympic team for Beijing, China.

The first two names won’t come as a shock to anyone. Crosby is a given considering his previous experience with Team Canada and he’s still considered one of the best players in the game. Armstrong said, “I’ve talked to Sid more than any (player) just because of my past relationship with him, and he’ll be our leader,” Armstrong said. “We go back to the 2010 Olympics.”

McDavid was an easy choice too, even if this will be his first time playing for the Olympic team. Crosby won gold in 2010 and 2014. McDavid is hoping 2022 will be his first of gold of many. He’s easily the most dynamic player in the game and fans have been eager to see him on the Olympic stage.

As for Pietrangelo, it’s not a shock that he was named to the team, but as one of the first three members of the roster, perhaps it’s a bit surprising. He’s got deep connections to the GM and he’s certainly got the experience. And, Armstrong grouped him right in with the best of the best. He said, “Those guys are at the top of their game in the League too, and they’re proven winners,” Armstrong said in an interview with NHL.com.

As for who gets announced next is unclear. The team may choose to make more announcements leading up to the Oct 15th date or reveal the remainder of the roster at the same time. Other potential names that are likely easy picks will be names like Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and Nathan MacKinnon.
