Barry Trotz Turns Down Winnipeg Jets Head Coaching Job

Barry Trotz has informed the Winnipeg Jets that he’ll be turning down the offer to coach and is taking a step back to be with family.

After weeks of waiting and many insiders believing it was only a matter of time before former New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz took the job in Winnipeg, Darren Dreger of TSN reports that Trotz has turned down the job for the Jets and has instead decided he’ll not jump back into the coaching.

Trotz has elected to spend time with his family versus hop back into a coaching role and the Jets will be left looking for another coach, with Trotz their Plan A and Plan B. Dreger reports, “Trotz informed the Winnipeg Jets of his decision today and intends on continuing to focus on family. Trotz acknowledged how difficult the decision was to not accept the head coaching job in Winnipeg.” It sounds like he simply needs time to recharge.

With that news, who winds up in Winnipeg will be a fascinating story to watch. Someone like Rick Tocchet will immediately jump up the line as a candidate for the open vacancy. Jim Montgomery is also receiving serious consideration.

This also means that Detroit, Boston, and Chicago are without coaches, although it appears the Blackhawks have hired Montreal Canadiens assistant Luke Richardson.

Bigger Picture Move For Trotz?

Some are wondering if this decision is as much about taking a break as it is setting up his long-term future. There is speculation he’s looking to get into management and a much higher executive role than remain a coach. If the idea is to one day become a general manager or a president of hockey operations, it might be wise to stand back for a while and take a good look at what teams might need some help in those roles.

Reports are that Trotz was deeply appreciative of Winnipeg Jets owner, Mark Chipman, GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, and all involved in this process and their commitment to winning.
