The Calgary Flames Add Forbort and Gustafsson

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that the Flames acquired Derek Forbort from the Los Angeles Kings, while Eric Francis of Sportsnet reports that they’ve also pulled Erik Gustafsson from the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Calgary Flames were being relatively quiet on trade deadline day. It was a surprise considering leading up to the afternoon, they were a team with cap space and rumored as an organization prepared to use it.

But, the Flames didn’t stay quiet for long. In an effort to replace the injuries sustained to captain Mark Giordano and defenseman Travis Hamonic, the team added two other blueliners.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that the Flames acquired Derek Forbort from the Los Angeles Kings, while Eric Francis of Sportsnet reports that they’ve also pulled Erik Gustafsson from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic adds that it is a fourth-round pick for Forbort. He has been a defense partner of Drew Doughty, logging more than 20 minutes a night for the Kings in each of the previous three seasons.

The return for Gustafsson was a third-round pick in this year’s NHL Entry Draft.

The Kings were sellers at this year’s deadline so his being moved isn’t a huge shocker. Gustafsson was also rumored as on the move and was being held out of the lineup and didn’t make Chicago’s latest road trip with the expectation he’d be moved on Monday. A player who once scored 17 goals in a season, he’s not had the same season for Chicago this year.

The Vegas Golden Knights were rumored to be the leaders on Gustafsson but a couple of days ago, talks about that happening quieted. Calgary wasn’t necessarily a favorite but the move makes sense.
