Senators and Pageau Still Haven’t Started Negotiations

There are reports the Ottawa Senators and Jean-Gabriel Pageau have not started discussions on a possible extension. This means he’s potentially a trade target to watch over the next two weeks.

During the Hockey Night in Canada Saturday Headlines segment, Chris Johnston reported that there is news on two of the biggest potential rentals of this season’s NHL trade crop.

While the New York Rangers have started negotiating with soon-to-be unrestricted free-agent Chris Kreider, the Ottawa Senators seem to have shown, through a lack of negotiations, Jean-Gabriel Pageau is likely to be moved.

Johnston noted the Senators and Pageau’s reps have not started discussions on any type of extension and while there’s time and perhaps a deal comes together last minute, that they’ve not even begun to talk about Pageau staying in Ottawa seems to speculate the center will be moved in the next couple of weeks.

There are likely plenty of teams interested in Pageau and over the past couple of months he’s been a strong candidate to be dealt. The team should do well in a trade, potentially picking up a first-round draft pick should they move him before Feb 24 but there are questions about whether or not he’s worth the cost.

Is Pageau Worth the Cost?

While Pageau is having the best season of his career, he’s not a shoe-in to be as productive as some are suggesting. In fact, of all the rentals available this season, Pageau might be the player who has the potential to exceed expectations or be a total bust. In the end, as a rental, the team who acquires him isn’t committed, but if that same team gives up a first-round pick, it could be an expensive move that backfires.

No doubt, Pageau is a good player but he has just two goals in his past 13 games and seven in his past 29. Not terrible, but certainly not a given he’s the player that changes a team’s fortune. Still, there are few options at center for teams to choose from and the Senators realize their selling in a sellers market.

Pageau came into the season with 63 goals in 368 career games (a 14 per 82 game clip).
