Sami Vatanen Going to Carolina Hurricanes

Reports are surfacing that the New Jersey Devils are trading defenseman Sami Vatanen to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Reports are surfacing that the New Jersey Devils are trading defenseman Sami Vatanen to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Vatanen was a player many thought would move and the Carolina Hurricanes were reportedly interested in adding to their blue line. Injuries to Dougie Hamilton and Brett Pesce meant something was likely coming for the Hurricanes. The fit just seems natural.

A rental, Vatanen will likely explore free agency in the summer.

Leading into the trade deadline, according to Craig Custance of The Athletic (subscription required), Sami Vatanen was getting a ton of interest from teams. That means he’ll likely get a lot of interest over the summer and this is likely a rental for the Hurricanes. Custance notes that as many as six or seven teams are “in” on the New Jersey defenseman.

The Devils were rumored to be among the busiest of teams at the deadline and that proved to be true. They moved Wayne Simmonds, Sami Vatanen and this was after moving Blake Coleman, Andy Greene and Taylor Hall earlier in the season.
