No. 1 Overall NHL Draft Prospect Lafreniere Says Senators Have Him Excited

No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, Alex Lafreniere is excited about the prospect of playing for the Ottawa Senators.

As the NHL announces that they’ll be postponing the NHL Entry Draft, potential No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, Alex Lafreniere took some time to comment about how that might affect him.

Pointing out that, right now, he’s more concerned with the health and well-being of everyone during such a trying time, he’s not worried about having to wait to get drafted. He said, “You know, for sure, it would be a little bit different.” Not seemingly phased by how the draft might be conducted or where it will take place, he added, “I think it’s still an honour to get drafted by an NHL team. It’s really special.”

He then noted something that caught a lot of attention. When asked about where he’d like to play, he seemed to single out the Ottawa Senators. In fact, Gino Reda of TSN said when he asked about the potential he might be drafted and play his career with the Senators, the consensus top-overall pick really “lit up.”

“It would be fun, it would be special for sure. It’s a great place to play and they have a lot of good players so it would be an honour for sure,” he explained. Craig Button of TSN agreed.

Button noted that the Senators have a very bright future with a lot of good prospects and if they add Lafreniere to the mix, they could have a very good team. Not to mention, the team has a ton of draft picks at this year’s draft and could add some additional pieces to be very good for a long time.

For Lafreniere, he’s also close to home if he winds up in Ottawa.

Whether or not he winds up in Ottawa playing next season, his 35 goals and 112 points in just 52 games with the Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL this past season, says he’s got a very good shot at it.
