In today’s NHL rumor rundown, there is news on the New York Islanders, Minnesota Wild, and the March NHL GM meetings.

The New York Islanders’ Contract Situations

Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post is reporting that Islanders’ forward Brock Nelson hasn’t had any real negotiation with the New York Islanders about a new contract extension. A pending unrestricted free agent he’s looking for a raise on his $4.25 million salary. Nelson has 43 points in 65 games with the Islanders this season.

Of the lack of talks, Nelson said, “There hasn’t really been any talks or any indication one way or the other. That’s a good thing for all parties, take it day-by-day. Everybody wants to win and we’re in a good spot to do that right now.”

Cyrgalis believes the Islanders would like to offer an extension but only a short-term one. That could mean a higher annual salary of around $6 million per season.

There is an expectation the team will go big-game hunting and pursue names like forward Artemi Panarin and defenseman Erik Karlsson. That could leave others like Jordan Eberle without a spot on the team after this season.

Minnesota Wild Will Not Rebuild

Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold created a video and emailed it to season ticket holders last week saying that they won’t be going through a rebuild. In the video, Leipold talks about the young and 22-year-old or younger core the Wild currently employ and the veterans the team is happy to have surrounding them.

He said, “We plan to make some noise this summer. Just so we all understand, this is not a rebuild. To look at our team, we are ready to play right now. We are building on the fly.”

The expectation out of Minnesota is that the team will try and make a splash in free agency this summer and spend some of the almost $20 million in cap space they have available to add one or two really big pieces.
