Connor McDavid Returns, Plus Mike Green to Oilers Deadline Buzz

Connor McDavid will return to the Oilers lineup against the LA Kings on Sunday and there is trade deadline buzz surrounding the Oilers and defenseman Mike Green.

Connor McDavid is in for the Edmonton Oilers Sunday night. After a couple of weeks off and questions about whether he’d get in against the Kings or wait another game, McDavid will suit up and try to help keep the Oilers stay near the top of the Pacific Division and in the playoff race.

“We’ve played some solid hockey. I’m looking to jump in and add to that,” McDavid said while speaking to the media.

Calling the injury relatively minor, McDavid said it was still important to treat every injury seriously and it was the right move to stay out, wait, heal properly and be ready to go. Knowing he’s not sure how he’ll feel until he gets out there, he felt the same way coming into this season, and took off as going one-two with Leon Draisaitl in the points race almost all season. It was as though he’d never had a summer-long injury to rehab.

McDavid’s been proud of the rest of the team. Calling them “solid”, he said it’s been fun to watch them succeed, said they’re not giving up too much and it’s a credit to the coach with lots of guys out of the lineup.

Oilers Heading Into The Deadline

When asked if the GM ever seeks advice from the captain, Connor said, “No, there’s not too much of that.” He added there’s no secret as to who is out there and potentially available. “The GM is going to what he’s going to do,” said McDavid.

With that in mind, what the GM, Ken Holland, might do has been discussed quite a bit in Edmonton over the past 24 hours. Tyler Ennis from the Ottawa Senators and the consensus seems to be the Oilers are the favorite to land the veteran forward.

We wrote yesterday, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that Ennis is a candidate but that other teams potentially in the mix as well.

There’s also buzz about a player Holland is familiar with out of Detroit. Elliotte Friedman mentioned Mike Green in connection to the Oilers and Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal writes the Oilers are a likely destination for the Detroit Red Wings defenseman.

Leavins notes that Green’s no-movement clause turned into a 10-team modified no-trade clause on Feb. 1 and he believes that Edmonton is not on that 10-team list.

Green’s $5.375 million salary is an issue, so there’d have to be a contract going back or some serious salary retention on the part of the Red Wings to make this work.
